Google to expand enough in NYC for 12,000 more workers - report

Google wants to expand its space in New York City, so that it can bring in over 12,000 new workers, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The report comes in the wake of other reports stating Amazon could choose New York City as one of the cities for its double headquarters.

Google is close to buying or leasing a planned 1.3 million-square-foot office building at St John’s Terminal in the New York City’s West Village neighborhood. The building is expected to complete in 2022 and would give Google space for more than 8,500 staff, based on the industry standard of 150 square feet per employee. The company will also expand its existing property at Chelsea Market by about 300,000 square feet, enough space for over 3,500 workers.

The company declined to comment on any talks about the St John’s Terminal property. A spokesperson said the company plans to expand Pier 57 to include a community space, winter garden and water taxi landing open to the public. The company bought the Manhattan Chelsea Market for USD 2.4 billion but agreed to keep leasing space in the building to food and retail tenants.
