HeroTel acquires IGEN Wireless

HeroTel has acquired Internet Generation (IGEN Wireless) for an undisclosed sum, expanding its footprint in the Eastern Cape, reports ITWeb. HeroTel now has has contiguous coverage from the West Coast to the Kei River, HeroTel chairman Alan Knott-Craig told ITWeb exclusively. IGEN provides wireless services to over 7,000 clients across the Eastern Cape and is one of the largest WISPs in South Africa.

HeroTel said it would leave the company's management intact following the acquisition. IGEN general manager Wanti du Preez said the company is excited to join HeroTel and work towards building a national WISP. HeroTel said it would have 30,000 clients on its WISPs by the end of 2017, and plans to double its coverage by the end of 2018. 

HeroTel would not disclose how much it was paying for the 100 percent acquisition of IGEN. Knott-Craig said that IGEN has a first-rate management team as well as an excellent mix of rural and urban clients.

South Africa's HeroTel announced the acquisition of Kosh Communication Services (Koshcom) for an undisclosed amount. Koshcom is a wireless ISP, founded in 2004 by Albert and Daleen Hurter. LCom is based in Queenstown and provides wireless broadband services in the central and northern regions of the Eastern Cape, primarily a rural area with limited telecoms infrastructure.

South Africa's HeroTel group has acquired the largest wireless internet service provider (WISP) in Cape Town, Sonic Telecoms, for an undisclosed sum, ITWeb reported. HeroTel acquired 100 percent of the business. It says Sonic has a healthy mix of residential, small and medium business and large corporate clients.

South Africa ISP Webafrica has launched LTE at Home packages, with a wireless router included. The package is delivered to new customers within five working days for a fee of ZAR 199. The LTE service comes with speeds ranging from 20 Mbps to 50Mbps, depending on coverage.

South African operator Vox Telecom has called on wireless internet service providers (WISPs) to work with it to provide better connectivity options for their customers. Vox said it was targeting wireless ISPs in towns where broadband coverage is limited, or where ADSL is old, over-subscribed, and unlikely to be extended.

South African independent voice and data provider Otel has acquired fixed and wireless broadband ISP Jireh Technologies. Otel believes Jireh's resources will help the company achieve its vision of becoming a fully fledged ICT systems integrator and continuing to add value to its business customers. Otel CEO Rad Jankovic said the acquisition of Jireh supports Otel's growth strategy and has an additional and welcome client focus through the access to last mile services that it provides.

South African private equity company Medu Capital has acquired a 15 percent stake in Hero Telecoms (HeroTel) for ZAR 74.25 million. HeroTel chairman Alan Knott-Craig Jnr told ITWeb that the investment was based on an enterprise value of ZAR 495 million for 100 percent of the HeroTel business.
