HP to make last batch of TouchPads for sale

HP said it will manufacture another batch of its TouchPad after a surge in demand following the cut in price. The tablet first went on sale in July and was quickly cut in price to drive demand, with the low-end version eventually costing as little as USD 99. Earlier this month HP said it plans to withdraw from the mobile device market and halt production of its webOS devices like the TouchPad. Now the company said in a blog posting that it would make another batch of the TouchPads to meet latent demand and release a limited number to the market before the end of October. It did not say how much the last devices would cost. From its fiscal fourth quarter, which starts 1 November, HP will wind down the webOS activities. The end of the mobile operations is part of HP's plans to spin off its Personal Systems business, which makes PCs and the webOS devices. Todd Bradley, head of the Personal Systems division and the former CEO of Palm, told Reuters that the PC company could still make tablets after the spin-off.
