Hughes and Telecomm to install 4,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in Mexico
Hughes Network Systems (Hughes) is teaming up with state-owned operator Telecomm to deploy hotspots powered by Facebook Connectivity's Express Wi-Fi platform in as many as 4,000 rural communities in Mexico. The rollout is part of Telecomm’s plan to bring affordable internet to all parts of the country under the Federal Government Connectivity and Social Coverage Programmes.

The Hughes Express Wi-Fi offer consists of a compact Hughes VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) combined with Facebook’s Express Wi-Fi software platform and connected to the Jupiter 2 (EchoStar XIX) High-Throughput Satellite. The first hotspot under this initiative was installed by Telecomm in the southern village of General Sandino, where there was previously no high-speed internet, allowing the community of 70 households to connect at prices of MXN 10 (USD 0.5) per hour.

At each site, Facebook Connectivity's Express Wi-Fi platform enables local managers to operate the system and make Wi-Fi available on handheld and laptop devices, added Hughes.
