Hungary to build 5G network with Huawei

Hungary will cooperate with China's Huawei to build its 5G network, writes local publication Budapest Business Journal citing Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto. He was speaking at the second Hongqiao International Economic Forum in Shanghai on 5 November. He said Huawei will work with Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom on the 5G rollout.

Szijjarto mentioned that the only condition for becoming a business partner with Hungary is the compliance with local laws and regulations. He added the country doesn't choose to collaborate or not with companies based on just their home country.

The Hungarian authority NMHH started the tender for 5G frequency allocation in June. Digi Communications was left out of the tender for the use of 5G frequencies in Hungary by NMHH.

Digi Hungary gathered over 80,000 signatures for its petition against its exclusion from the country's next 5G auction, according to local publication Hwsw.hu. The petition was launched at the end of September in an attempt to put pressure on the local telecom authority NMHH, which is conducting the spectrum sale. Digi's petition can be joined both online and in stores by providing a name, ID number or home address.

Digi Hungary said its Digi Mobil test service launched in May 2019 will close at the end of December, writes local publication Hwsw.hu. Existing customers will have 60 days to choose from the new tariff portfolio, and the fourth domestic mobile operator will start commercial operations from 2021.

Huawei, Lenovo to open new facilities in Budapest

Huawei will open a R&D centre in Budapest, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said on 20 October, according to local publication Budapest Business Journal. Szijjarto added that Chinese computer maker Lenovo will build a HUF 8.2 billion plant in Ullo, on the outskirts of the capital. Lenovo VP Guan Wei said the new plant will initially make desktops, workstations, and data centre products. Lenovo's project will create 1,000 jobs.

Vodafone Hungary continues to expand its 5G network coverage this year with the development of 5G base stations in larger rural towns and around Lake Balaton. The company initially deployed 5G base stations in the inner city of Budapest and Zalaegerszeg.

A Hungarian court upheld Hungarian telecom authority NMHH chairman's decision to exclude Digi Communications from taking part in the country's 5G auction. The communications service provider may appeal the decision to a court. This summer, NMHH launched the process of selling usage rights for the 700 MHz, 2,100 MHz, 2,600 MHz and 3,600 MHz bands. Digi Hungary launches first 5G live base station

Digi Hungary launched its first 5G live base station at its headquarters in Budapest on 18 November, writes Economica.net. Implemented with Ericsson, the first base station uses 20 MHz of spectrum already held in the 3,400 MHz. Digi acquired this spectrum in 2016 in a sales process that also included Vodafone, Magyar Telekom and Telenor. Any Digi client with a 5G compatible device can test the service in the area around the company's headquarters.

Digi revenues up 11% to EUR 299 mln in Q3

Digi Communications saw its revenue (excluding intersegment revenue and other income) for the three month period to 30 September grow 10.9 percent year-on-year to EUR 299.4 million. Total operating expenses increased 3.5 percent to EUR 247.1 million, while operating profit rose to EUR 52.3 million compared with EUR 25.2 million for the three month period ended 30 September 2018. Net profit surged to EUR 20.8 million from EUR 8.0 million a year earlier.

Digi Hungary's 'Digi Mobil Teszt (Digi Mobil Test)' tariff introduced at the end of May will continue to be available on unchanged terms after 1 January 2020, writes local online publication HWSW.hu citing managing director Dragos Spataru. The tariff plan has a HUF 0 monthly fee and includes unlimited mobile data traffic, HUF 0 per minute within the network, HUF 5 per minute outside the network and in the EU, HUF 0 per SMS fee within the network and HUF 21 per outside the network.

Vodafone Hungary launched a commercial 5G service a few days before the official announcement ceremony with politicians, writes local online publication Hwsw.hu. The service provider does not charge for 5G access, and all customers with Red tariffs and 5G capable devices can join the next generation network.
