Hutch, Edotco start Open RAN trial in Sri Lanka

Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka and its infrastructure partner Edotco Services Lanka have launched an Open RAN trial in Sri Lanka. The trial site was deployed in Polatthapitya in the Kurunegala district, the Daily Mirror reports.

The trial will be carried out using Edotco's multi-purpose lamp-pole site, a small-cell antennae-enabled telecommunication infrastructure designed to power connectivity in urban and rural settings. Edotco operates an infrastructure network of 500 multi-purpose lamp-pole sites.

Customers can now activate an eSIM in-store or obtain a standard physical SIM.

Juniper Networks joins Vodafone, Parallel Wireless on open RAN trial in Turkey

Juniper Networks is working with Vodafone and Parallel Wireless, a specialist in Open RAN products, on a multivendor RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) trial for tenant-aware admission control use cases. The trial will initially run in Vodafone's test labs in Turkey, with plans to move into its test infrastructure, supporting O-RAN interfaces.

KOREA, REPUBLIC OF 6 JAN 2022

KT partners NTT Docomo, Fujitsu to bring open RAN to South Korea

South Korean operator KT and Fujitsu have completed a verification facility at the KT Research and Development Center in Seoul. The two companies used Fujitsu's Open RAN-based 5G base station equipment to test call connection during interoperability trials for open fronthaul. Japanese operator NTT Docomo has provided Fujitsu with technical support throughout the project. With the construction of this new test facility, KT plans to accelerate the introduction of Open RAN technology to its Korean 5G network.

Japan to trial wide-area 5G Open RAN in 2022 - report

Japan will set up a wide area experimental network in 2022 to test 5G open radio access networks (Open RAN), Nikkei reports, without citing sources. The project will be led by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. NTT Docomo, Rakuten Mobile and NEC are expected to be included in the project.
