IBM names Krishna its new CEO
IBM has named Arvind Krishna its new CEO from 6 April. Krishna will succeed Virginia Rometty, chairman and CEO, set to retire after almost 40 years of service at the company. Rometty will continue as executive chairman until the end of the year. Meanwhile, James Whitehurst, IBM senior VP and CEO of Red Hat, has been elected IBM president, also from 6 April. 

IBM said Krishna played a significant role in developing key technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud, quantum computing and blockchain. He also grew IBM's Cloud and Cognitive Software business and led the largest acquisition in the company's history.

Whitehurst will continue on as senior advisory, as IBM continues to evolve its business and strategy. Whitehurst was number two at IBM, and seen as a potential CEO, the Wall Street Journal noted. No new president has been named.

IBM has announced plans to spin off its managed infrastructure business in a new company. This will allow IBM to focus on its software and services business, expanding further in hybrid cloud solutions since its takeover of Red Hat last year.

IBM has announced a range of new services and solutions backed by open source software provider Red Hat designed to help companies and telecommunications operators migrate to edge computing in the 5G era. At its Think Digital conference, IBM said the suite of tools and services combined its experience and expertise in multicloud environments with the open source technology of Red Hat, which it acquired last year for USD 34 billion.
