IFT green lights Telefonica-AT&T spectrum rental deal

Friday 18 December 2015 | 10:19 CET | News
Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has announced that it has given its approval to a spectrum rental agreement between Telefonica and AT&T. The spectrum rental and frequency swap deal allows Telefonica's Movistar Mexico unit to use spectrum in the 1.9 GHz band in some regions, while AT&T will in turn make use of concessions in the 1.7/2.1 GHz band. The frequency swap agreements are part of the reform to increase competition in the telecommunications sector and reduce the dominance of America Movil, which controls about 70 percent of Mexico's mobile phone lines.
