India starts next round of 5G spectrum auction
The Indian government has launched the next round of its 5G spectrum auction. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has requested from telecom regulator Trai a reference for base prices for 700 MHz of spectrum in the 3.3-3.6 GHz frequency band, as well as for 26 GHz and 28 GHz spectrum for provision of 5G services, The Economic Times reports. The DoT is expected to seek a clarification from the Supreme Court apex court to avoid any confrontation in a bid to determine spectrum allocation sans auction for satellite communications.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched public consultations on the 'Auction of spectrum in the frequencies identified for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) / 5G'. TRAI is seeks recommendations on various issues, including the applicable reserve price, band plan, block size, quantum of spectrum to be auctioned and associated conditions for auction of spectrum in 526-698 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300-3670 MHz and 24.25-28.5 GHz

Vi to trial 5G services with Athonet in India

Indian operator Vodafone Idea (Vi) has signed a partnership agreement with Athonet, a private LTE and 5G services platform provider, to test 5G-based services to build Industry 4.0. The partnership with Athonet includes demonstration of enterprise use cases on 5G in several areas including smart construction, smart warehouse, smart agriculture and smart workplace.

Bharti-backed OneWeb, a low Earth orbit satellite communications company, has signed an agreement with NewSpace India, the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), to use the Indian-built PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and the heavier GSLV-MkIII (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) as potential platforms to launch OneWeb's satellites in India from 2022.
