India’s smartphone market saw shipments jump 12 percent year-on-year to 33.5 million units in the first three months of 2020, despite the impact of a nationwide lockdown in the final week of March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report from Canalys. The report also shows that Xiaomi leads the local market, with a share of 30.6 percent, shipping 10.3 million smartphones in the quarter.

Chinese vendor Vivo saw its shipments jump by nearly 50 percent, overtaking Samsung for the first time to take second place. The vendor shipped nearly 6.7 million units, grabbing a personal record share of nearly 20 percent. Samsung fell 14 percent to third place with 6.3 million units shipped. Realme continued to rank fourth with 3.9 million units, while Oppo finished fifth, with 3.5 million units.

Smartphone shipments in India are expected to decline in the second quarter of 2020, as the lockdown remains in force up to 3 May.
