Inea tests 25G PON technology

Poland cable operator Inea is testing new 25G PON technology, which will be commercially available in 2021. The tests are performed in cooperation with Nokia. Inea claims that it is the first operator in Europe and one of the first in the world to test the technology.

The operator has been investing in FTTH networks continuously since 2011, and since 2017 has been making them available under the Fiberhost brand to the largest nationwide and local internet service providers.

Based on FTTH, 1 Gbps internet has been available in Inea's offer since 2016. In 2018, Inea introduced a symmetrical connection and internet up to 10 Gbps for individual customers. Since 2017, the operator offers its customers the fastest internet in Poland according to the independent rankings by Speedtest.pl.

The 25G PON technology tested by Inea is the direct follower of the XGS-PON technology, which enables the provision of symmetric internet services up to 10 Gbps. The new 25G PON technology now enables data transfer speeds of up to 20 Gbps, as confirmed by tests carried out by Inea together with Nokia. It is important for Inea that GPON and XGS-PON or 25G PON services can be provided on the same optical fibre. This will allow the operator to offer new and existing customers fibre-optic services at a higher level.
