Infinera gets operator backing to set up XR optics industry forum

A new industry forum has formed to drive the development of XR optics. Initial members of the Open XR Forum are the telecom operators BT, Windstream, Verizon, Lumen and Liberty Global, and equipment marker Infinera, the main proponent of the XR system to date.

The Open XR Forum will work on setting interoperable standards to support the development of XR optics products and the adoption of point-to-multipoint coherent pluggable transceiver technology. The industry partners will work together to define compatibility requirements, establish interoperable interfaces and demonstrate interoperability, create a global supply chain and begin standard licensing programmes for the technology.

The members see significant potential for the technology to lower network costs while also meeting the sharp rise in bandwidth demand. Specifically XR optics addresses the limitations of traditional point-to-point optical transport with a more flexible architecture that can respond better to changing traffic patterns, they said.
