Intel in talks to buy Infineon's mobile division - report
Germany-based semiconductor manufacturer Infineon is negotiating with Intel about selling its mobile phone chips division, according to the Financial Times Deutschland citing sources within Infineon. At the same time, Infineon CEO Peter Bauer is against selling the division that has been restructured and is returning to profitability. Infineon's mobile phone chips division is very attractive for Intel as it supplies chips to Apple for the iPhone and iPad as well as chips for Nokia, Samsung and RIM. Meanwhile the industry has been doubting if the division is large enough to survive as its competitors like ST Ericsson and Qualcomm are two and eight times bigger.
