Intel previews Google TV at developer forum

Intel CEO Paul Otellini has outlined the company's strategy to expand into new markets for connected devices, beyond its traditional processors for PCs. At the Intel Developer Forum, Otellini said in his keynote address that Intel is positioning itself to take advantage of an expected "new marketplace for pervasive computing", where users will "choose the device that provides the best experience for any given intended use and that no one device will win". The company's nearly USD 10 billion in acquisitions over the past year, from Wind River to McAfee, supports this strategy to supply products for a wide range of connected devices. Otellini showed during his speech two products powered by the Intel Atom processor CE4100 and Google TV, which will come out this autumn. The Sony Internet TV and the Logitech Revue add-in box combine access to the internet with TV viewing, building on Google's Android platform. D-Link, Telecom Italia and several other companies are also expected to launch processor CE4100-based devices soon, Intel said. The company also outlined at IDF its next generation of core processors. Codenamed Sandy Bridge, the chips will be produced at Intel's 32nm fabs and include a new "ring" architecture that allows the built-in processor graphics engine to share resources such as cache, or a memory reservoir, with the processor's core to increase a device's computing and graphics performance while maintaining energy efficiency. Computers based on the new chips, which alaso include a number of enhancements for visual material, should be available early next year. Intel also demonstrated a dual processor, next-generation Intel Xeon processor server running Vidyo video conferencing software. The new Xeon chips are on schedule for production in the second half of 2011, Intel said.
