Iridium-8 ready for lift-off at Vandenberg Air Force Base

Iridium Communications, in partnership with SpaceX, is prepared to launch the final 10 Iridium Next satellites on 11 January. SpaceX will launch the eighth set of new satellites on a flight-proven Falcon 9 rocket destined for low Earth orbit. The payload and the rocket have been transported to the launch pad, and the rocket is vertical for launch. The rocket has an instantaneous launch window scheduled for 7:31 am PST (15:31 UTC).

Iridium Next is the company’s USD 3 billion, Next-generation, mobile, global satellite network scheduled for completion in early 2019.

Iridium completes upgrade of USD 3 bln satellite constellation

Iridium Communications said it completed its USD 3 billion satellite constellation upgrade campaign known as Iridium Next. The company also introduced a new small-form-factor transceiver known as the Iridium Certus 9770, which will enable creation of new consumer and industrial applications that are highly portable and IoT-friendly, optimised for small size and low cost, yet with higher speeds than in the past thanks to the upgraded Iridium satellite network.

Iridium welcomes McBride as new COO

Iridium Communications appointed Suzi McBride as its new COO, effective as of 11 February. McBride replaces Scott Smith who decided to retire effective 15 March. Smith led Iridium's technology and operations, including Iridium Next, which recently completed its final launch. Smith will continue to work with Iridium in a consulting role as the handoff to his successor is completed.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket puts final 10 Iridium Next satellites into orbit

Iridium Communications announced its final 10 Iridium Next satellites were delivered to low earth orbit (LEO) at 07:31 am PST (15:31 UTC) by a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base. All 10 satellites have successfully communicated with the Iridium Satellite Network Operations Center and are preparing to undergo initial on-orbit testing. This was the eighth and final launch for Iridium's historic launch campaign with SpaceX, seeing a total of 75 new satellites deployed

Network expansion plans and takeover news helped a number of telecoms shares edge higher during week 2, but the overall sentiment was negative. The Telecompaper Stock Index European Telecoms ended the week down 1.4 percent, underperforming the EuroStoxx 50 index, which was up 0.9 percent. At the extremes were German micro cap Ecotel (+13%) and Germany's 1&1 Drillisch (-15%).

Iridium to launch global IoT satellite network with AWS

Iridium Communications has announced a new partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop a global satellite network for the Internet of Things (IoT), with a focus on places where there is no coverage. Iridium will work with the AWS Partner Network (APN) to create Iridium CloudConnect, a satellite cloud-based network that will make Iridium IoT services available with AWS IoT.

Iridium Communications announced a short delay for the next launch of its Next fleet of satellites, to 25 July from 20 July. As a result, the company is also delaying its second-quarter results to 31 July.

Iridium starts pre-launch processing for next satellites

Iridium Communications announced that it sixth batch of five Iridium Next satellites are in processing at SpaceX's west coast launch site, Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. This launch will increase the total number of Iridium Next satellites in space to 55 and is the third Iridium launch to use a "flight-proven" SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Currently targeted for 19 May at 1:04:24 pm PDT (20:04:24 UTC), these Iridium Next satellites will be sharing this Falcon 9 with the twin spacecraft for the NASA/Germ

SpaceX launches next ten Iridium Next satellites

Iridium Communications announced that SpaceX successfully launched the fourth set of 10 Iridium Next satellites into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on 23 December. The launch marks the midway point of the Iridium Next launch programme, and was the first Iridium launch to use a SpaceX flight-proven rocket. The first stage booster for Iridium-4 was previously used for Iridium-2, making Iridium the first company to reuse the same rocket booster.
