Irish data protection regulator starts investigation into Facebook data breach

Ireland's Data Protection Commission has opened an investigation into the recent data breach at Facebook. The DPC said it would look at whether Facebook violated the EU's General Data Protection Regulation by not taking appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect its users and their data.

The DPC is in charge of oversight of Facebook across Europe, as the company's European headquarters is in Ireland. Facebook notified the regulator the same day it made the breach public. The company told the DPC that its internal investigation is still underway, as well as remedial measures to mitigate the risks to users.
