ITU sends emergency telecom equipment to Vanuatu

The International Telecom Union (ITU) said it has deployed emergency telecommunication equipment to Vanuatu following the damage caused last week by category 5 tropical storm storm Cyclone Pam. ITU dispatched 40 satellite phones, ten Broadband Global Area Network terminals and 35 solar panels to the island nation to support relief coordination efforts. The cyclone paralysed telecommunications and affected rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Vanuatu Prime Minister Joe Natuman noted that all 83 islands suffered substantial devastation.
