Juniper unveils network virtualisation platform Contrail
Juniper Networks announced a new network virtualization and intelligence platform for software-defined networks, called Contrail. Contrail virtualizes the network, brings advanced networking capabilities into the hypervisor and integrates with cloud orchestration systems, to enable seamless automation and orchestration across cloud platforms running on x86-based servers. The system also offers an analytics engine, providing a real-time view into network operations.

The company has already tested the equipment with more than 40 customers, and the commercial version of Contrail is available today as a perpetual or subscription software licence. A perpetual licence is priced at USD 1,700 per socket, and a one-year subscription costs USD 1,000 per socket.

Formerly known as JunosV Contrail, the system is comprised of the components needed to create a virtual overlay network: SDN controller, vRouter and analytics engine. It's integrated with Juniper Networks' virtual firewall, Firefly Perimeter, as well as Juniper MX, EX and QFX Series routers. In addition, it works with a wide variety of hypervisors, physical networks and cloud orchestration platforms, including compatibility with both CloudStack and OpenStack platforms. Technology partnerships that enable integration with Contrail to facilitate SDN and cloud deployment include Cedexis, Check Point, Citrix, Cloudscaling, Dorado, Flash Networks, Gencore Systems, Gigamon, Guavus, ISC8, Lumeta, Mirantis, Red Hat, RiverBed, Sandvine, SevOne, Silver Peak, Sonus Networks and

Websense. Juniper Networks also introduced OpenContrail, an open source software platform that makes the core software powering Contrail available through an open source licence. The use of OpenContrail is available via an Apache 2.0 licence. OpenContrail will provide all the components necessary to run a data-center overlay, including an SDN controller, virtual router, orchestration API, analytics and management console.
