KPN extends i-mode service: new handsets, MMS, Java
KPN has extended its i-mode handset portfolio for the Netherlands by launching the Nokia 3650 and the Siemens S55. Similarly the i-mode service will be extended with new services, including MMS and mobile Java games. Later also the NEC N341i will be added. KPN says that its MMS service has some unique features as users can send pictures to KPN's content partners with which they can personalize these services. At present the operator is in talks with its competitors about MMS interoperability. It expects to conclude these discussions in a few weeks. By implementing the Java application i-mode subscribers will receive an increasing offer of downloadable games and other dynamic services. The Nokia handset extends i-mode with a video service. KPN closed agreements with some content providers which have video content on offer. Besides these partners it is also possible to download video clips outside of the i-mode menu. KPN further announced that it will launch a prepaid i-mode service at the end of August.
