KPN rolls out Fon Wi-Fi service
KPN has started rolling out a public Wi-Fi service with Fon. According to Fon, the roll-out should be completed in September. The companies first announced a cooperation agreement in early 2013, and KPN said in April this year that it would start a trial of the service in the Amsterdam neighbourhood of IJburg with 800-900 households. It expected to have up to 1 million customer routers activated for the service by year-end. 

Fon said this is still the target and already 200,000 routers allow the shared public access. KPN's fixed broadband customers will have free access to the Wi-Fi network as well as Fon's over 13 million hotspots worldwide. Some KPN mobile customers will also gain access to the service. KPN's cable rivals UPC and and Ziggo offer a similar shared service over their customers' Wi-Fi routers.

KPN asks customers to activate Fon network

KPN has asked customers to open their Wi-Fi modems to allow access by other KPN customers, in support of its national Wi-Fi network. This is part of its cooperation with Wi-Fi provider Fon. The companies started rolling out the service in July, a year and a half after they first announced the partnership. More and more people are using Wi-Fi when away from home. According to research from the Telecompaper Consumer Panel, the share of Dutch consumers who have never used public Wi-Fi has fallen from 58 percent in 2011 to just 29 percent in 2014.

KPN reported mobile consumer revenues of EUR 354 million for the second quarter, down 9.0 percent from a year earlier. Mobile service revenue fell 11 percent to EUR 303 million. KPN plans to start testing a national Wi-Fi service with Fon in April, the company told Telecompaper.
