KT passes 1 mln 5G subscribers, starts 5G roaming in Europe

Korean operator KT announced it passed 1 million 5G customers on 21 September, less than six months since launching the service. The company also launched 5G roaming with the European operators TIM (Italy), Sunrise (Switzerland) and Elisa (Finland). 

Roaming was launched earlier this month with China and Japan as well. Initially customers with the Galaxy S10 will have access to 5G roaming. KT is also offering 30 minutes free to data roaming plan subscribers to mark the launch.

China ends 2019 with more than 1.6 billion mobile customers

China Mobile gained more than 3.73 million new customers in December 2019, up from 2.95 new additions in November. China Telecom added 1.18 million new subscribers, while China Unicom lost 2.7 million users in December. China Mobile, however, remains by far the largest operator, with 950.2 million customers, of which 758 million are 4G users. China Telecom, which has been growing steadily in the past year, has moved into second place with 335.57 million mobile customers, compared to 318.4 million at Unicom.

SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus to jointly provide 5G services on subways

South Korean operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have teamed up to provide 5G services on subways in major cities. The three operators said they have recently completed the deployment of 5G infrastructure on the subway system in Gwangju, 330 kilometers southwest of Seoul, writes Yonhap news agency. The three mobile operators plan to install 5G networks for subways and metro stations in major cities, including Daegu, Daejeon and Busan, in the first quarter of this year.

South Korea reached 4 million 5G mobile network subscribers in October, with the number expected to breach the 5 million mark by year-end, Yonhap news agency reports citing government data. KT's Q3 revenue grows 4.5% boosted by Media/Contents business

South Korean operator KT saw its third-quarter operating revenues grow 4.5 percent year-on-year to KRW 6.21 trillion. EBITDA rose 2.1 percent to KRW 1.20 trillion, while net profit plunged 10.9 percent to KRW 213 billion. The Media/Contents activities were the growth driver in the third quarter, with revenues up 13.8 percent year-on-year to KRW 701.3 billion.

KT, Hyundai to develop 5G-based smart factory services

South Korean mobile operator KT and shipbuilding conglomerate Hyundai Heavy Industries Group have teamed up to develop smart factory services based on KT's 5G network, Yonhap news agency reports. Back in May this year, KT and Hyundai Heavy Industries Group signed a 5G smart factory services deal and since then, the two companies have been working on projects to combine KT's 5G network, AI and big data technologies with Hyundai Heavy Industries' robotics and shipbuilding expertise.

Movandi, KT demonstrate O-RAN Alliance mmWave radio unit

5G specialist Movandi and South Korea's largest telecommunications company KT will jointly demonstrate an O-RAN (Open Radio Access Network) 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) radio unit (O-RU). The technology combines essential building blocks for accelerating the development of 5G networks by using open radio access network (O-RAN) architecture to increase flexibility for service providers.

South Korea ends July with 2 mln 5G subs, adds 850,000 5G users in August

South Korea's 5G user base increased by 500,000 for three consecutive months from May. 5G customer additions are estimated to have jumped to 850,000 in August, boosted by the launch of Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 5G smartphone on the local market. KT, Tessares show low latency 5G multi-radio set-up on commercial network

KT announced a new test of 5G multi-radio, low latency technology on its commercial network with Tessares. Named ATSSS (Access Traffic Steering, Switch and Splitting) by 3GPP, the techqniue is based on the multi-path TCP platform used by Tessares to offer hybrid internet access platforms. KT hopes to use it to offer low-latency 5G services integrated with LTE and Wi-Fi access.

South Korea tops 2 million 5G subscribers in first four months

South Korea has reached the milestone of 2 million 5G subscribers in four months after the service was commercially launched on the local market, Yonhap news agency reports, citing industry data. The country's three mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus commercially launched fully-fledged 5G mobile networks on 3 April. The number of South Koreans with subscriptions to a 5G service stood at 260,000 at the beginning of May, to reach 1 million in mid-June.

Syniverse, LG Uplus to offer first 5G roaming service between Korea, Finland

Syniverse is working with Korea's LG Uplus to offer a 5G roaming service with mobile operators around the world. As part of this, LG Uplus' mobile customers will be able to access Elisa's 5G services while traveling abroad in Finland. LG Uplus said it recently completed what it calls the world's first commercial testing of 5G roaming in Finland.

Swisscom, SK Telecom sign 5G roaming agreement

Swiss operator Swisscom said it has signed a roaming agreement with South Korean operator SK Telecom to offer 5G roaming in the Asian country before the end of July. SK customers will also be able to roam on the Swisscom 5G network in Switzerland.

Finnish operator Elisa and the Swiss operator Swisscom claim they are the first in the world to offer their customers a chance for 5G roaming. Elisa's and Swisscom's customers can now use 5G network when traveling in Finland or in Switzerland. Elisa said it's now among the first operators in the world to offer its customers a chance to use a 5G network in Switzerland with Swisscom.

KT to invest KRW 500 bln in 5G-based cloud services by 2023

South Korean operator KT has announced plans to invest KRW 500 billion (approximately USD 422 million) by 2023 to develop cloud services based on its 5G network, Yonhap news agency reports. KT will blend its 5G network and cloud capabilities to launch convergence services, including smart city services, smart factories and connected cars, for enterprise clients.
