LG Uplus almost doubles Q4 net profit

South Korean communications provider LG Uplus moved to a fourth-quarter net profit of KRW 85.3 billion versus a net loss of KRW 48.1 billion in the year-ago quarter. However, revenues went down 9 percent year-on-year to KRW 2.68 trillion as service revenues climbed 7.1 percent to KRW 2.09 trillion. Handset revenues plunged 46.7 percent to KRW 470.7 billion. EBITDA jumped 26.9 percent to KRW 590.5 billion, while EBITDA margin rose 6.2 percentage points to 22 percent.

Wireless revenues increased by 9.5 percent year-on-year to KRW 1.39 trillion due to subscriber mix improvement and reflection of revenue settlement on the fourth quarter. Wireless ARPU went up 6.3 percent to KRW 42,583. The company ended the quarter with 11.26 million wireless customers, including 8.45 million LTE subscribers.

SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus fined for illegal handset subsidies

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) fined SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus a combined KRW 58.4 billion for providing illegal handset subsidies, The Korea Times reports. The KCC says it "found the three violated regulations on subsidies". The KCC investigation showed that the operators' subsidies averaged 621,000 won per subscriber. KCC limits the amount of subsidies to KRW 270,000.

LG Uplus revenue almost flat in Q2, net profit plunges 58.8%

South Korean communications group LG Uplus saw its overall second-quarter almost flat year-on-year at KRW 2.77 trillion versus KRW 2.76 trillion in the year-earlier period. The slight revenue increase of 0.4 percent year-on-year was mainly due to service revenue which grew by 6.7 percent year-on-year. Handset revenues fell 14.5 percent to KRW 704.3 billion and rental revenues climbed 4.5 percent to KRW 4.4 billion.

LG Uplus reported first-quarter revenues down 2.8 percent from a year earlier to KRW 2.780 trillion. While service revenue was up 9.1 percent to KRW 2.016 trillion, handset revenue fell 24.4 percent to KRW 760 billion due to the regulator's imposed ban on sales due to excessive discounts. LG Uplus adds almost 35,000 broadband subs in Q1

South Korean operator LG Uplus ended March with a total 2.96 million broadband subscribers, after a net addition of 15,025 broadband connections in the month, the company said in a statement. During the first quarter of 2014, the operator added a total 34,809 broadband subscribers.
