MediaTek, Micron validate LPDDR5X for Dimensity 9000 5G smartphone chip

MediaTek said it has validated Micron’s LPDDR5X DRAM to partner its new Dimensity 9000 flagship chip for 5G smartphones. Announced at the recent MediaTek Executive Summit in California, the Dimensity 9000 will be the first to support LPDDR5X memory, which will deliver a peak bandwidth of 60 Gbps.

LPDDR5X is faster and uses less power than the LPDDR5 and LPDDR4X DRAM currently used in most smartphones. Micron has shipped the first batch of samples of the LPDDR5X, built on its first-to-market 1α (1-alpha) node.

Nokia, China Mobile, MediaTek reach nearly 3 Gbps in 3CC carrier aggregation trial

Nokia, China Mobile (CMCC) and MediaTek have announced a record speed in a test of the world's first 3 Components (3CC) Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology in Shanghai. The converged 700 MHz/2.6 GHz network reached a peak downlink speed rate of 2.94 Gbps. The trial used Nokia's AirScale 5G baseband and MediaTek's Dimensity 9000 5G mobile platform on CMCC's network.

MediaTek doubles Q4 profit

MediaTek reported revenues for the fourth quarter up 33.5 percent year-over-year to TWD 128.654 billion. The slight quarter-over-quarter decrease was mainly due to smartphone product mix changes. The year-over-year increase was mainly from product specifications upgrade or higher demand across major products, the company said. Annual revenue totaled TWD 493.415 billion, up 53.2 percent year-over-year.

Micron Technology has appointed Rob Beard its new general counsel and corporate secretary. Beard succeeds Joel Poppen, who plans to retire after more than 26 years at the company. He has served as Micron's senior VP of legal affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary since 2013.

MediaTek and TSMC have unveiled what they call the world's first 7-nanometer 8K digital TV flagship system-on-chip (SoC), the MediaTek Pentonic 2000. The MediaTek Pentonic 2000 features artificial intelligence (AI) engines, Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation (MEMC), Versatile Video Coding (VVC) decoding and picture-in-picture (PiP) technology.

MediaTek releases dedicated Filogic IoT chips with Wi-Fi 6

MediaTek has announced the launch of two new dedicated IoT chipsets under its Filogic-branded range. The SoCs, dubbed Filogic 130 and Filogic 130A, integrate a microprocessor, AI engine, power management unit, plus Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 subsystems into a single chip. Filogic 130A also comes with an audio digital signal processor to allow device makers to easily add voice assistants and other services into their IoT products.

MediaTek reported third-quarter revenues of TWD 131.1 billion, up 34.7 percent from a year earlier and 4.3 percent higher than in Q2. The University of Oulu is seeking applications by 31 October for its new professorship in System on Chip (SoC) technologies for wireless systems. The five-year position concerns investigation and development of SoC technologies with an emphasis on wireless applications that enable data rates toward 1 Tbps rates for 6G. The professorship will be established with the support of Nokia, MediaTek and Nordic Semiconductor.

Micron starts volume shipments of LPDDR4x memory on 1α node

Micron said it starts shipping LPDDR4x in volume on its leading 1α node this month. This follows the introduction of initial 1α node DRAM products in January. In addition to the new mobile products, the company has completed validation of its 1α-based DDR4 on leading data centre platforms, including third-generation AMD EPYC. Both are in volume production in Micron's advanced DRAM fabrication facilities in Taiwan, including its newly established A3 facility in Taichung.
