MediaTek unveils new octa-core Dimensity 820 chip for 5G, gamers

MediaTek has unveiled its Dimensity 820 system-on-chip (SoC), made to enable 5G speeds, multimedia, gaming, AI and new imaging and photography technologies. The company said the chip was specifically designed for global sub-6 GHZ 5G networks in Asia, North America and Europe.

Octa-core chip for gamers, photographers and film buffs

The chip features four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores at 2.6GHz within an octa-core CPU, Arm Mali G57 GPU graphics plus HyperEngine 2.0 enhancements for gaming immersion. TheHyperEngine 2.0, combined with the five-core GPU, will help provide a smooth gaming experience with reduced network latency.

For visuals, brands can support for 120Hz high frame-rate displays, with MediaTek MiraVision helping the provision of vivid visuals in videos and streams. The MediaTek AI processing unit will also help provide AI-camera capabilities. The Imagiq 5.0 HDR (high dynamic range) native image signal processor (ISP) supports up to four cameras and up to 80MP sensors. Finally, there is a multi-fram 4K video HDR for both bright and dark environment. The chip automatically captures frames at different exposures and intelligently fuses them into a single video stream, all in real-time.

Intelligent design

The engine also intelligently adjusts the CPU, GPU and memory resources to optimize power and performance.

The system integrates a 5G NR (sub-6GHz) modem with MediaTek’s 5G UltraSave technologies, including exclusive 5G UltraSave Network Environment Detection and 5G UltraSave OTA Content Awareness, for energy efficiency. The 5G modem design uses dynamic bandwidth part (BWP) adaption and connected mode discontinuous reception (C-DRX) power-saving technologies.
