MegaFon awards 3G tender to Huawei, Nokia Siemens Networks
Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei Technologies have won a 3G network tender from Russian mobile operator MegaFon. The company will construct 3G networks in the areas with free frequencies where there is demand for 3G services. Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks will supply MegaFon with controllers and Utran, the vendors will also provide installation services, and arrange for technical support and training. In 2008, MegaFon plans to invest some USD 250 million in 3G networks based on HSDPA and HSUPA. MegaFon already launched 3G services in St Petersburg but has trouble getting frequencies for other areas as the defence ministry is using the spectrum. Other 3G licence holders MTS and VimpelCom have run into the same problems, according a Kommersant article in November.
