Megafon starts gigabit LTE service in Moscow

Russian mobile operator Megafon has launched commercial services with speeds approaching 1 Gbps on its LTE network in Moscow. The network is based on the aggregation of three bands - two 20 MHz carries in the 2,600 MHz FDD bands and one 20 MHz slot of the 1,800 MHz TDD band. The network also uses 256 QAM modulation and 4x4 MIMO to deliver the gigabit speeds.

The maximum broadband speed totaled 979 Mbps during a demo. Nokia LTE-A Pro AirScale equipment and the Sony Xperia XP Premium smartphone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and X16 LTE modem were used during the tests.   

Megafon is the first to launch LTE Cat 16 in Russia and one of the first in Europe to deploy the technology on its 4G network.

Megafon sees LTE traffic grow 92% in Moscow in H1

Russian mobile operator Megafon announced that the number of LTE internet users grew by 42 percent year-on-year in its Moscow branch in the first half of this year. Data traffic used jumped by 60 percent across the network of the operator, and the figure soared by 92 percent on its LTE network.

Nokia has appointed Igor Parfyonov as its new director for work with the mobile operator Megafon, reports Cnews.ru.  Parfyonov worked at Megafon for a long time and later took up the position of CTO at mobile operator Beeline.

Megafon, Qualcomm test NB-IoT

The testing was carried out on the 900 MHz band in the R&D centre of the operator in St Petersburg. An end-user terminal on the basis of the Qualcomm MDM9206 modem and network equipment from Huawei were used during the tests.

Megafon, Huawei demonstrate Massive MIMO technology

Russian mobile operator Megafon has demonstrated the Massive MIMO technology on its LTE network. Eight Huawei Mate 9 smartphones were used during the tests and achieved speeds up to 851 Mbps. LTE FDD with 20-MHz carriers in the 1,800 MHz band was used during the test.

Megafon reaches 65% LTE coverage

Russian mobile operator Megafon said its customers consumed an average 4.3 GB per month at the end of 2016, up four-fold from five years ago. In a sum-up on the progress of its LTE network, the company said 4G has now reached 43 percent of all network traffic, and about 65 percent of the population is covered by its LTE network. The company claims the widest coverage in Russia, with around 30 percent more LTE base stations than its nearest competitor.

Sony intros Xperia XZ Premium with 4K HDR, gigabit LTE

Sony has unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia XZ Premium at Mobile World Congress. The new device focuses on Sony's technological advances, with camera functions such as slow-motion playback, a 4K HDR display and LTE at up to 1 Gbps. Expected to launch in late Spring, the Xperia XZ Premium runs Qualcomm's latest high-end processor, the Snapdragon 835, with the X16 LTE modem supporting up to 1 Gbps. The 5.5-inch display supports 2160 x 3840p resolution, a first in smartphones, according to Sony.

Megafon demonstrates 5 Gbps

Russian mobile operator Megafon has demonstrated the 4.94 Gbps data speed during the Fifth International Business Summit (IBS 2016),which is held in the city of Nizhniy-Novgorod. Nokia AirFame and AirScale commercial equipment has been used during the demonstration. Earlier this year, Megafon and Nokia signed a cooperation agreement on the development of the 5G technology in Russia. Megafon claims that it is the first operator globalwide which launched the commercial exploitation of the LTE-Advanced network
