Micron introduces AI development platform following acquisition of FWDNXT

Micron Technology has announced a new set of high-performance hardware and software tools for deep learning applications with the acquisition of FWDNXT, a software and hardware startup. When combined with advanced Micron memory, FWDNXT’s (pronounced “forward next”) artificial intelligence (AI) hardware and software technology enables Micron to explore deep learning products required for data analytics, particularly in IoT and edge computing. 

With this acquisition, Micron is integrating compute, memory, tools and software into a comprehensive AI development platform. This platform in turn provides the key building blocks required to explore innovative memory optimised for AI workloads.

Micron sees higher Q4 after stronger than expected Q3

Micron reported higher-than-expected results for its fiscal third quarter to 28 May, with CEO Sanjay Mehrotra citing "exceptional execution" despite challenges in the macro environment. Revenues jumped to USD 5.44 billion from 4.79 billion the year before. The net profit slipped to USD 803 million and USD 0.71 per diluted share from 840 million and 0.74. The adjusted profit amounted to USD 941 million and USD 0.82 per diluted share.

Micron Xccela Flash adopted by Xilinx to accelerate performance of AI applications

Micron Technology is working with Xilinx to boost the boot and dynamic configuration performance of Xilinx's Versal platform, an adaptive compute acceleration platform (ACAP). ACAP, a new category of heterogeneous compute devices, will use Micron Xccela flash and other Micron memory products to reduce system startup times and increase system responsiveness in automotive, industrial, networking and consumer applications that use AI.

Micron said demand looking up but will remain cautious amid lower Q4

Revenues rose sequentially, to USD 4.87 billion from 4.79 billion in the third quarter, though they were down from the 8.44 billion recorded the year before. The net profit slipped to 561 million, from 840 million in Q3 and 4.3 billion the year earlier, with diluted EPS at 0.49 from 0.74 and 3.56, respectively. The operating cash flow was off at USD 2.23 billion form 2.71 billion in Q4 and 5.16 billion year-on-year.

Capable of delivering up to 16GB1 of low-power DRAM (LPDRAM) in a single smartphone, Micron's 16Gb LPDDR4X extends the company's leadership in memory capacity and performance for existing and next-generation mobile devices.
