Microsoft signs mobile licensing deal with Samsung

Microsoft announced the signing of a definitive agreement with Samsung Electronics to cross-license their patent portfolios. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung's mobile phones and tablets running the Android mobile platform. In addition, the companies agreed to cooperate in the development and marketing of the Windows Phone operating system. Microsoft has been signing licensing deals with a number of Android devicemakers, in an effort to cash in on the growth in Google's OS and make the most of its patented technology. For Samsung, the deal underlines its commitment to a multi-OS strategy, including Android, Windows and its own Bada OS. The Korean company recently announced the launch of its first phone running the new Windows Phone 7.5, the Samsung Omnia W smartphone.
