Microsoft to buy Skype for USD 7-8 bln - report
Microsoft is close to a deal to buy Skype for USD 7-8 billion, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. A deal could be announced as early as 10 May, the sources said, though they cautioned that negotiations aren't yet final and a deal could still fall apart. Including Skype's long-term debt, the total value of the acquisition is about USD 8.5 billion. The takeover is expected to strengthen Microsoft's Lync communication service and online services offering, as well as give a boost to the Windows Phone mobile system. Skype filed for an IPO last year, but has yet to put a firm date on the offering. In the meantime, it has talked to companies such as Cisco, Facebook and Google about a possible takeover, according to the report. Microsoft and Skype declined to comment.
