
Microsoft upgrades communications server with Lync launch

Microsoft launched the latest version of its communications server software. Microsoft Lync is the new family brand for the products formerly known as Microsoft Communications Server, Microsoft Office Communications Online and Microsoft Office Communicator, and now also includes Microsoft Lync Web App and Microsoft Lync Online. A trial version is already available for download, and Microsoft Lync 2010 and Microsoft Lync Server 2010 will be available for purchase on 1 December. Lync integrates a business's instant messaging, presence, audio, video, webconferencing and voice communications with key enterprise software such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Exchange. Some of the latest features include HD video, conference recording, and social features like status updates and activity feeds. Microsoft announced that first customers include the Estee Lauder Companies, Nikon, Marquette University, France Telecom and Herrenknecht. Partners such as Polycom and Aastra Technologives also announced devices optimized for Lync, with over 70 IP phones, headsets, speakerphones and webcams already available, Microsoft said. Another 30 partners have launched applications for Lync, for services such as contact centers, call recording, accounting, performance monitoring services and new applications that embed communications within business processes. Service providers ready to start delivering the platform include BT, Dell, Dimension Data, HP and Verizon Business.
