Downloads and spending on mobile gaming set new records in the second quarter, as many people turned to gaming while forced to stay at home during the Covid-19 pandemic, App Annie reports. In the first week of Q2, weekly mobile game downloads broke records at over 1.2 billion, and weekly downloads remained at 1 billion on average throughout the quarter, up 20 percent year over year.
Consumer spending on mobile games also set a new quarterly record, at over USD 19 billion spent on purchases through the app stores in Q2. As a result, mobile game spending is set to extend its lead over desktop and home console gaming to more than 2.8x and 3.1x, respectively, the market researcher estimates.
Growth was strongest on Google Play, with game downloads there up 25 percent year-on-year to over 11 billion in Q2. Games accounted for 45 percent of all downloads on Google Play, compared to 30 percent on iOS. Downloads on Apple's App Store grew a slower 20 percent annually, to nearly 3 billion in Q2.
Both app stores saw strong growth in consumer spend during the quarter, up 15 percent compared to the first quarter of 2020. Spending on games on Google Play rose 25 percent quarter over quarter, over twice the growth rate on iOS. Games also accounted for the majority of consumer spend across both stores, at 85 percent on Google Play and 65 percent on iOS.
