
The mobile phone market recorded 334 million handsets shipped during the fourth quarter, up 11.6 percent from the year-ago quarter according to a report by IDC. Nokia shipped 133.5 million units, up 26.5 percent from 105.5 million units in the year-ago quarter to acquire a market share of 40 percent. Samsung took the second position worldwide with 46.3 million units shipped, up 40.7 percent from 32.9 million units previously. Samsung achieved a market share of 13.9 percent. Motorola came in third place with 40.9 million units, down 37.8 percent from 65.7 million units shipped. Sony Ericsson with 30.8 million units, LG Electronics with 23.7 million units and other vendors with 58.8 million units made up the rest of the list.
For the entire year, total mobile phone shipments reached 1.14 billion units in 2007 with 12.4 percent overall growth. Nokia led vendors in shipments throughout the year, with 437.1 million units shipped, up 25.8 percent from 347.5 million units shipped in 2006. Samsung, which had been the number three vendor in the industry, surpassed Motorola during 2007 to capture the number two spot. Samsung shipped 161.1 million units, up 41.7 percent from 113.7 million units. Motorola came in third place with 159 million units, down 26.9 percent from 217.4 million units. Sony Ericsson with 103.4 million units, LG Electronics with 80.5 million units and others with 202.9 million units made up the rest of the list.
