Motorola Mobility revenues up 22%, losses narrow
Motorola Mobility reported first-quarter revenues up 22 percent from a year earlier to USD 3.0 billion. The handset maker's net loss narrowed to USD 81 million, or USD 0.27 per share, from USD 212 million, or USD 0.72 per share, in the first quarter of 2010. After cash flow of USD 107 million in the quarter, Motorola finished March with a total USD 3.3 billion in cash available. The Mobile Devices unit posted revenues up 30 percent to USD 2.1 billion, and the operating loss improved to USD 89 million from USD 192 million a year ago. The company shipped a total 9.3 million mobile devices, including 4.1 million smartphones and more than 250,000 Xoom tablets. That's up from 8.5 million phones, including 2.3 million smartphones, shipped in the year-earlier period. The Home division recorded revenues up 8 percent to USD 904 million, and operating profit improved to USD 53 million from USD 20 million. For the second quarter, Motorola forecast a net result of breakeven to a profit of USD 35 million or 12 cents a share. That excludes any one-time items.
