MTN Irancell set to begin tests on 3G network
MTN Irancell said it will soon begin carrying out tests on its 3G network in a number of public universities and government institutions in Tehran after receiving approval from the industry regulator for operation from 23 August. Using 3G and newer generations, MTN said it will be possible to offer mobile virtual training, provide access to TV channels on the move, use an electronic library, and offer services such as LBS, M2M, VoIP, virtual office and e-Government. MTN is the first national operator to be granted a 3G licence in Iran.

MTN Irancell H1 subscriber base up 3.2% to 98.5 mln

MTN Irancell increased its subscriber base in the first half of 2014 by 3.2 percent to 42.7 million despite the impact of sanctions on growth in a highly penetrated market. Some positive economic trends are starting to emerge, it said, with the relatively stable average rate for the Iranian rial against the US dollar for the six months to June and the decline in Iran's month-on-month inflation rate in June.

Irancell slashes call tariffs for postpaid customers

Iran operator MTN Irancell announced that the voice call tariffs for all postpaid SIM cards (iSIM) will be reduced. In a statement, the firm said its prepaid subscribers have the option to change their SIM card to a postpaid plan. Existing postpaid subscribers and those who switch will until 22 September enjoy a second-based tariff of IRR 499 per minute for all on-net and off-net calls as well as calls made to landlines. Irancell previously charged postpaid subscribers IRR 625 per minute for off-net calls.

MTN makes leadership appointments in Nigeria, Iran, Uganda

MTN has strengthened its leadership core in Nigeria, Iran and Uganda. Under the changes, Mazen Mroue, the CEO of MTN Uganda, has been appointed as the new COO of MTN Irancell. He will be succeeded in Uganda by Brian Gouldie, the CMO of MTN South Africa. Ferdi Moolman, currently the COO at MTN Irancell, has been appointed to the position of CFO at MTN Nigeria.
