
Russian mobile operator MTS has launched its first pilot 5G area in Moscow, based in the Smart Home pavilion of the Moscow municipal IT department in the VDNKh exhibition centre. The network works on the 28 GHz band and will operate on a permanent basis.
MTS plans to launch a 5G laboratory for start-ups in the pilot area. Various products and services based on 5G will be developed. In 2020, the 5G pilot area will cover the most of the area of the exhibition centre.
MTS recently launched a non-commercial 5G network in the town of Kronshtadt in the St Petersburg region. The network was launched in cooperation with Huawei. In a first stage, the network will cover important social sites. In the future, smart city, autonomous vehicles, IoT, tele-medicine services and AR/VR products will be tested on the network.
