Music downloads via cellphones grow in Japan
Music downloads via cellular phones outpaced downloads to digital music players by a large margin in Japan in H1 2005, according to data from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), reports MacWorld. The number of cellular phone downloads including complete songs and ringtone melodies was 108.9 million in H1, with a value of JPY 13.6 billion (approximately EUR 100 million) as of 30 June. The number of legal music downloads from the Internet to devices such as portable music players totaled 2.2 million songs, with a value of JPY 538.8 million. Cellphone downloads had a 98 percent market share by song and a 96 percent share by value.
