
NCC slashes interconnection rates

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced plans to lower interconnection rates over the next three years. The termination rate for voice services provided by new entrants and small operators in Nigeria irrespective of the originating network shall be NGN 6.40 from 01 April, NGN 5.20 from 01 April 2014 and NGN 3.90 from 01 April 2015. The termination rate for other operators shall be NGN 4.90 from 01 April, NGN 4.40 from 01 April 2014 and NGN 3.90 from 01 April 2015. The current rate, which is the same for all operators, is NGN 8.2. According to the NCC, a new entrant is a newly licensed operator entering an existing or new market in the past three years, while a small operator is an existing operator with a market share of no more than 7.5 percent of subscribers.
