Nearly half of US homes have mobiles but no landline

The proportion of US homes with mobile phones but no wireline phone service grew to 47.4 percent at the end of June, 3.4 percentage points more than a year earlier, according to preliminary results from the National Health Interview Survey of the US Centres for Disease Control. Over two-thirds of all adults aged 25-34 and of adults renting their homes were in mobile-only households. This is higher than the rate for those aged 18–24 (59.4%). The percentage of adults living with only mobile phones stood at 56.6 percent for those 35–44, 40.8 percent for those 45–64 years old, and 19.3 percent for those 65 and over.

According to the survey, approximately 113 million adults (46.7% of all adults) lived in households with only mobiles and nearly 41 million children (55.3% of all children) did so. This represents a 3.6 percentage point increase for adults and a 3.2 point increase for children. Approximately 3.4 percent of US households had no phone service of any kind. About 7.5 million adults (3.1%) and 2.3 million children (3.2%) lived in these households.

Two in three adults living in rented homes (67%) had only mobile phones. This rate is nearly twice the rate for adults living in homes owned by a household member (37.2%).

Hispanic adults (59.2%) were more likely than non-Hispanic white (43.2%) or non-Hispanic black (48.1%) adults to be living in households with only mobile phones.
