SafeNet, a global provider of Internet security technology that is the de facto standard in the VPN industry, on November 20, 2002, announced that NETGEAR has chosen its SafeXcel-1741 security co-processor to provide security to its new Wireless Firewall Router device, the FVM318. The FVM318 is a wireless firewall router device that establishes IPSec-based VPN tunnels over the wireless LAN and multiple tunnels over the WAN connection, so that small businesses can have a completely secure and cost-effective network solution.
According to Anthony Caputo, Chairman, and CEO of SafeNet, "NETGEAR is an emerging leader for networking applications, including wireless routers and LANs. NETGEAR's selection of our silicon and software is a perfect opportunity to deploy our technology to retail markets in a more widespread fashion. NETGEAR's wireless products have won accolades from ZDNet and CNET and we are pleased that they have come to rely on SafeNet's security technology for fast, dependable, cost-sensitive, end-to-end security."
Along with the FVM318 Router, NETGEAR will be bundling SafeNet's new version of its remote access client software called SoftRemoteBasic. This bundled wireless router/remote access client package will be available in popular retail stores. The combination of these technologies will allow NETGEAR to offer a complete and proven security solution for wireless LANs.
By using the SafeXcel-1741 and SoftRemoteBasic bundled with its new wireless router, NETGEAR will be the first to offer this functionality in their market sector. Part of the Momentum Series in SafeXcel silicon chips, the SafeXcel-1741 is a highly sophisticated security co-processor optimized for very cost-sensitive designs such as routers, firewalls, wireless access points, DSL/cable modems, and residential gateways.
Consumers who purchase the router/software bundle will be offered a full version of SoftRemote at a reduced rate. SoftRemoteBasic is a modified version of SafeNet's de facto standard client, streamlined for wireless efficiency using IPSec security for client-to-gateway connections. SoftRemoteBasic is best suited for applications requiring basic IPSec security like Wireless LAN (WLAN) and 802.11 where advanced features for remote access are not necessarily needed or desired.
"By offering SafeNet technology with our new FVM318 router, we are providing a unique and unprecedented offering to our customer base, with a cost-effective wireless networking solution that is fast and secure," said Patrick Lo, Chairman and CEO for NETGEAR. "SafeNet is a leader in security who develops superior technology, both in software and hardware, allowing the company to expand its capabilities to all areas and provide expertise to its OEM customers."
