Nokia accuses LCD makers of price-fixing

Nokia is suing several LCD manufacturers, alleging they colluded to fix prices on displays. In a complaint filed 25 Novermber with the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Nokia named Samsung Electronics, LG Display, Sharp, Hitachi Displays and Chunghwa Picture Tubes as defendants, among others. Nokia alleges in the complaint the "illegal conspiracy raised the price of LCDs above the price that would have prevailed in a competitive market", the Wall Street Journal reported. Nokia uses the LCDS for its mobile phones and claims it "suffered damages as a result...and is entitled to treble damages and injunctive relief to remedy these injuries". The complaint comes after the US Justice Department fined several LCD makers on price fixing late last year. At the time, Sharp, Chunghwa and LG Display agreed to plead guilty to price fixing. Chunghwa Picture Tubes deputy spokesman Wilbur Chien said the company hasn't received any court documents and declined to comment further on the Nokia case. Freda Lee, a spokeswoman at AU Optronics, also said the company hasn't received any court documents from the US. Officials at the other companies named in the suit were either unavailable for comment or didn't have immediate comment.
