Norwegian telecoms anti-crime group ITAKT stops landline number spoofing from overseas
The Norwegian internet and telecommunication sector's anti-criminality action group, ITAKT, said that telecoms operators in Norway will start joint efforts in November to stop foreign criminals from spoofing Norwegian geographic landline numbers to commit fraud. Telia Norway, GlobalConnect, Telenor Norway, Ice and Altibox all belong to ITAKT, which was set up in 1999.

Telia Finland said it blocked over 2 million scam calls from abroad in October. On the busiest day, more than 160,000 calls with spoofed numbers were thwarted.

Telia Norway says wangiri calls to mobile phones double in Q2 but call spoofing declines

Telia Norway said it managed to halt 12.4 million fraud attempts aimed at Norwegian mobile customers in the second quarter of 2023. The number of blocked wangiri calls doubled from the first quarter of the year to 9.2 million but the number of call spoofing attempts blocked fell to 3.2 million from 3.8 million in Q1. Telia said 45 percent of fraudulent calls came from Sri Lanka in Q2, with 15 percent originating from Tunisia and 12 percent from Afghanistan.

Telia blocks 734,300 fraudulent call attempts in Nordic region in Q1

Telia Company managed to block 734,300 fraudulent call attempts in the Nordic region in the first quarter of 2023, according to Telia Denmark. The number of attempts to deceive Danes via the telephone is extremely high, it said, adding that such calls can be divided into wangiri and spoofing attempts.

Nkom fines Telia for failing to check customer ID properly at MyCall subsidiary

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom said it has imposed a NOK 1.5 million fine on Telia for breaching the requirement to obtain unambiguous customer identification when selling a mobile subscription. This follows a series of articles in the newspaper Dagbladet in December 2022 that alleged that unauthorised persons had created fake subscriptions with Telia's cash card subsidiary MyCall. Those subscriptions were then used for criminal activity, the reports claimed.

Telia Norway says scam call attempts to mobile customers more than double in 2022

Telia Norway said that it successfully blocked 77 million scam calls to mobile customers in 2022 compared with just under 37 million in 2021. There are many more fraud attempts directed at Norwegians than people in other Nordic countries, said Oivind Kristiansen, fraud expert at Telia Norge. Telia stopped almost 29 million scam calls in Sweden in 2022, nearly 10 million in Denmark and just over 6 million in Finland.

Norway to start offering local mobile numbering in January alongside private 5G network permits

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom said that to align with the availability of local 5G networks for the business sector, the watchdog will also start offering local mobile network telephone codes. Numbering resources for non-public networks and test purposes will come under the Norwegian country code 242 from 01 January 2023.

Germany adopts new measures against number spoofing

New regulations on number spoofing have come into effect in Germany from the start of December. All telecom operators must disconnect calls that falsely display the emergency call numbers 110 or 112, expensive numbers that begin with (0)900 or (0)137, or numbers for directory enquiry or short code services, in order to protect consumers from fraud attempts.

Truecaller daily active users rise nearly 15% year on year in Q3

Caller identification and spam blocking provider Truecaller said that its average number of daily active users (DAU) reached 261.1 million during the third quarter of 2022, up by 14.87 percent from 227.2 million in Q3 2021. Average monthly active users reached 331 million in Q3 this year, an increase of 40 million year on year.

Belgium suffers 'plague' of fraudulent phone calls

Belgian telecom regulator BIPT and the Center for Cyber Security Belgium (CCB) have detected hundreds of thousands of fraudulent telephone calls in Belgium since the end of last week. The calls appear to be from Belgian numbers, but in reality there are usually from mostly foreign numbers. The callers impersonate a bank, police or other well-know organisation as a way to obtain personal information.

Telia blocks more phone fraud attempts in Norway than neighbouring countries in January

Telia Norway has published figures showing that there are more telephone fraud attempts in Norway than in neighbouring countries. In January 2022, the operator blocked more than 4 million suspicious calls in Norway, but only half that amount in Sweden and Denmark.

Telenor Norway says new spoof call prevention function stops 10 times as many calls

Telenor said it is activating an advanced system called 'Se Hvem' ('See Who') to reduce the incidence of fraudulent calls. It claims to be among the first mobile operators in the world that can actively stop scam calls. After one week in service, Se Hvem has stopped ten times as many fraudulent calls as normal, it said.

Telia Norway said it blocked 20,000 fraudulent calls in the fourth quarter of 2020. It said there had been a large increase in such calls in January 2021.
