Now taps Nokia for 5G network deployment in Philippines

Now Telecom and Now Corporation have selected Nokia to introduce a 5G network and 5G use cases in the Philippines. Under the terms of the deal, the three parties will focus on the expansion of Now’s current broadband telecom network by rolling out a 5G standalone network in Philippines. The agreement also covers the development of 5G use cases on the local market. 

Nokia reports it currently has more than 133 commercial 5G contracts worldwide. Now Telecom received its renewal of provisional authority in September this year, to install, operate, and maintain a nationwide mobile system. The authority is not specific to 3G mobile communications technology but can extend to other technologies such as 4G, 5G, or even outer space.

Philippines operator Now Telecom reports it has signed the Secondary Agreement with the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA)-funded grant for a Technical Assistance (TA) on the deployment of 5G networks in the country. Nokia's 5G Mobile Network and Nationwide Broadband Network (NBN) projects are supported by the US government, which provided USD 2.15 million (approximately PHP 118.9 million) in funding.

Now Telecom, together with affiliate firm Now Corporation (Now Corp), has signed a memorandum of understanding with SBA Towers Philippines, a subsidiary of SBA Communications, a provider of towers and other shared infrastructure in the Philippines. The parties are negotiating the lease of build-to-suit sites, towers, and passive telecom infrastructure and facilities. This infrastructure will be used for the installation of Now's facilities and equipment to provide telecommunications and/or internet services

Now Corp has announced it has increased its stake in Now Telecom from 19 percent to 24.23 percent. Now Telecom's franchise has been extended for another 25 years beginning in 2018, Now Corp said. Now Corp reports it is "currently setting the stage" for a public listing as well as its 5G rollout.

Nokia has announced that its IP/MPLS network solution has been selected and deployed by Pelindo 4, a port management company in Indonesia, to provide LTE wireless connectivity for remote real-time monitoring of its crane performance and operation. Nokia and its partner Kurnia Energy Engineering (KEE) have deployed the 7705 Service Aggregation Router–Hm, which is designed to extend IP/MPLS services over cellular and WLAN networks, on all the cranes across the Makassar Container Terminal (TPM).

Now Telecom secures Philippines' fourth telecom operator license

Now Telecom has announced it has secured a permit from the Philippine government to operate as the country's fourth major mobile phone operator. Philippines' National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) has issued a provisional license, which allows Now Telecom to install, operate and maintain a nationwide mobile telecommunications system.

Now Corp's profit jumps 39% in 2019, unveils 5G FWA deployment plan

Philippines operator Now Corp reports that its Fiber Air business's gross revenue reached PHP 185.9 million in 2019 versus PHP 112.4 million in 2018, which represents an increase of 65 percent. Revenue growth was mainly boosted by higher demand in guaranteed broadband from the enterprise segment. Total gross revenues reached PHP 220.7 million, and net income jumped to PHP 11.3 million in 2019, up 39 percent year-on-year.

Philippines-based Now Telecom has signed a partnership agreement with Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC) and Frontier Tower Associates Management (FTA). The parties agreed to discuss and negotiate the lease of build-to-suit sites, towers, and passive telecommunications infrastructure and facilities that will be made available for the installation of Now's facilities and equipment to provide telecommunications and/or internet services.

Philippines-based Now Corp. has signed a partnership agreement with UnionBank of the Philippines for the use 5G networks. "The potential for 5G in financial services would include reduced video lag for real-time video chat and consultations between bankers and consumers, full-power mobile pop-up branches, shift to the cloud for mobile banking, and more accurate fraud detection and cybersecurity", said Now deputy CEO Rodolfo Pantoja.

Now Telecom to launch 5G services in Philippines

Philippines operator Now Telecom plans to launch 5G services on the local market. The company plans to offer its 5G services to both residential and business customers, Business Word Online reports, citing Now Telecom president Rodolfo Pantoja. Now Telecom has also announced that its board of directors approved an 11 percent share swap with its parent Now Corp., which will increase the company's share in Now Telecom to 30 percent.
