NSN to sell optical networks business to focus on mobile

Nokia Siemens Networks has reached an agreement to sell its optical networks business to US-based Marlin Equity Partners in a move which would see the unit being established as an independent company. While NSN did not disclose the agreement's financial terms, it said the divestment was intended to enhance NSN's strategic focus on mobile broadband and to give the optical networks business the resources and flexibility to address market opportunities. Marlin plans to form a new company headquartered in Munich, Germany, with worldwide operations. It will be led by NSN's optical network division's existing management team, with Herbert Merz as CEO. Up to 1,900 employees, mainly in Germany, Portugal and China, from the optical business unit and related functions are expected to transfer to the new company. Related customer contracts are planned to be transferred. NSN expects the transaction to close in the first quarter of 2013.
