NTT DoCoMo is considering a strategy for 3G mobile communications services in Taiwan, where it already provides i-mode mobile Internet services through an alliance with KG Telecommunications (KGT), mobile service provider in Taiwan. DoCoMo is KGT's 2nd largest shareholder with a 21.4% stake. KGT does not hold a 3G licence after withdrawing from Taiwan's auction of 3G licences in December 2001. DoCoMo originally invested in KGT to take i-mode and 3G services to Taiwan, so this leaves a gap in its international strategy there. DoCoMo declined to comment on a report by the Economic Daily News that it would welcome the acquisition of KGT by Far EasTone Telecommunications, mobile operator with a 3G licence in Taiwan.
