Ofcom forces O2 UK to change traffic management practices

Telefonica UK (O2) has given several assurances to regulator Ofcom after it raised concerns about the operator's compliance with the EU's net neutrality regulations. The concerns were raised after O2 sent Ofcom information about its traffic management practices.

O2 has agreed to stop compressing streamed video content across its network (rate control); and to stop compressing any web content or images to manage traffic - both by 30 April 2019. O2 also confirmed that it has stopped using its Vasona platform to prioritise video and social media traffic when there is temporary network congestion.

The operator has also provided written assurances that it will not re-introduce these, or similar, traffic management practices without informing Ofcom and updating its website first; and will write to Ofcom as soon as possible, and no later than 30 April 2019, to confirm compliance with these commitments. After receiving these assurances, Ofcom is satisfied that no further action is needed at this time.
