Ofcom reviews BSkyB wholesale sports obligation
UK communications regulator Ofcom has announced plans to review the 'wholesale must-offer' obligation placed on British Sky Broadcasting in relation to its Sky Sports 1 and 2 channels. Following the February 2014 decision by the Court of Appeal confirming Ofcom's power to impose the wholesale must-offer, Ofcom will now undertake a review of the obligation. Ofcom is separately considering a complaint from BT under the Competition Act 1998 which alleges that Sky has abused a dominant position in relation to negotiations over the supply of Sky Sports 1 and 2 for BT's YouView platform.

Ofcom consults on Sky Sports wholesale requirement

UK communications regulator Ofcom has opened a consultation until 27 February 2015 to determine whether regulation requiring pay TV operator Sky to offer its Sky Sports 1 and 2 channels to other pay TV providers to ensure fair competition remains appropriate.

BT starts offering Sky Sports 1 and 2 on YouView

BT TV has started offering Sky Sports 1 and 2 on its YouView internet TV boxes, following its successful application for interim relief at the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Sky Sports 1 and 2 will join the existing offering on YouView of BT Sport, ESPN and the Eurosport channels. BT announced that it can now stop selling the Vision+ STBs, which it had continued to sell to BT customers who wanted to view Sky Sports. BT offers customers extra YouView+ box

BT has announced the Extra Box to allow customers the option of having two YouView+ boxes in different rooms in their homes. The Extra Box will automatically include the same channel subscriptions and bolt-ons as the main box in the house. Customers will need to sign up for a 12-month Extra Box subscription at GBP 5 per month and buy an additional BT YouView+ box for GBP 99.

BSkyB ends Q3 with 11.42 million retail customers

British Sky Broadcasting added 764,000 new paid-for subscription products in the third quarter 31 March, with additions for the nine months reaching 2.4 million. It added 74,000 net new TV customers in Q3. British Sky Broadcasting has signed a new multi-year licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures. Two thirds of downloaded apps not used regularly - study

Ofcom's latest Adults' Media Use and Attitudes Report shows that while almost half (48%) of UK smartphone users have download an app, two thirds of downloaded apps were not used regularly. Smartphone owners have on average 23 apps installed, but only use 10 regularly. More than three quarters (78%) of recent app downloaders used friends and family recommendations to select apps compared with social media advertising (17%), in-app advertising (16%) and media advertising (11%).
