Ooredoo Qatar demonstrates 5G services with pilotless aerial taxi

Ooredoo Qatar has run a 5G with smart city demonstration around The Pearl including a 5G bus and a 5G house boat. Ooredoo management and several VIPs attended the event. The highlight was the world’s-first self-driving, 5G-connected aerial taxi, which is a large, drone-like vehicle big enough to transport two people to a destination up to 20 minutes away at 130 km per hour.

The taxi is automatic and runs on Ooredoo’s 5G network, meaning there is no driver. It can deliver passengers safely to their destination above traffic and other time-consuming obstacles.

With the Ooredoo 5G Bus Experience, passengers had the chance to test Ooredoo 5G while on the move and enjoy a connected commute at up to 2.6 Gbps. To demonstrate the future of entertainment, Ooredoo set up a 8K virtual reality service on a modern house boat in The Pearl, supporting gaming with no buffering.

Ooredoo Qatar starts 5G network tests across desert

Ooredoo Qatar has announced that customers will be able to use 5G across Qatar's desert, as soon as commercial devices are available in Qatar. It has begun testing 5G towers in desert areas such as Sealine and will be offering trials to selected VIP customers via 5G home broadband devices.The devices work on both the Ooredoo 4G and 5G network and can achieve speeds of up to 2 Gbps, which compares with 100 Mbps on Ooredoo's fibre network.

Ooredoo Qatar revenues down as customer base falls, EBITDA grows 1%

Ooredoo Qatar's customer base stood at 3.3 million at the end of September, down from 3.5 million a year earlier. Revenues for the first nine months of 2018 fell to QAR 5.8 billion from QAR 5.9 billion in 2017, while EBITDA grew 1 percent to QAR 3.0 billion, thanks to an improved revenue mix and cost efficiencies.

Ooredoo Qatar launches Hala Flexi 10 card

Ooredoo Qatar has announced the launch of the Hala Flexi 10 Card, the smallest denomination ever in this range. The new Hala Flexi 10 Card offers 70 Flexi Points, valid for two days including the day of activation, and costs QAR 10. Local calls and SMS cost one Flexi Point per minute/message, local data costs 0.14 Flexi Points per megabyte, and international minutes start from one Flexi Point to call India, and two for Bangladesh and for Nepal.

Vodafone Qatar switches on its 5G network

Vodafone Qatar said it is switching on its first live 5G network. New applications will include remote medical treatment, driverless cars, and industrial use. At the launch, CEO Sheikh Hamad Abdulla Jassim Al Thani laid out Vodafone Qatar's vision for 5G to propel Qatar towards becoming one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world.

Ooredoo says 5G home broadband tests show fibre-like speeds

Ooredoo Qatar announced it is pushing forward with testing 5G home broadband devices. Over 75 5G-ready Ooredoo network towers are now in place around Doha, and the first tests of home broadband devices show speeds comparable to fibre on the 5G network, the company said.

Ooredoo Qatar expands 5G network to 20 sites

Ooredoo Qatar announced that its commercial 5G network has reached 50 sites in Qatar. Since Ooredoo announced it was the first operator in the world to launch a 5G network commercially in May, the company has invested heavily in rolling out the next-generation technology to ensure Qatar is at the forefront of 5G developments and the 5G ecosystem, it said. Ooredoo Qatar reaches 2.51 Gbps on 5G network

Ooredoo Qatar is pushing forward with its 5G network roll-out plan, less than three weeks since it launched the 5G grid commercially on the 3.5 GHz spectrum band. Chief Executive Officer Waleed Al Sayed, announced that Katara is officially the second live site. During an event, Ooredoo demonstrated the speed of the 5G network in the Cultural Village, and it reached 2.51 Gbps with extremely high throughput and low latency.

Ooredoo Qatar has showcased three future mobile network applications designed to enhance the experience for spectators at Khalifa International Stadium during the final of the Emir Cup.
