Oppo unveils first under-screen camera at MWC Shanghai 2019
Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has unveiled its first device with a selfie camera under the display at MWC Shanghai 2019. In a statement, Oppo said the new technology – dubbed Under-Screen Camera (USC) – is designed to save room on the display and avoid the need for a notch, pop-up or sliding mechanism to house the sensor. “By integrating the front camera and the screen, USC provides users with a complete view, an immersive screen and an integrated body,” said the company.

Oppo said USC features a customised camera module that captures more light, together with “highly-transparent” material that enhances transmittance of light through the screen. In addition, a combination of haze removal and white balance algorithms enable features such as multi-frame HDR, defogging and smart beauty modes.

The company didn’t reveal when USC will be available commercially but said its aim is to provide users with the ultimate ‘true full screen’ through the technology. Earlier this month, rival Xiaomi also revealed that it’s working on an under-the-display selfie camera.
