Oracle opens new data centres in 5 countries, targets 36 by end-2020
Oracle has opened new data centres in 5 countries and is looking to have them in 36 locations by the end of 2020, reports Reuters, citing executive the VP of engineering in Oracle’s cloud unit, Clay Magouyrk. The company added regions in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Osaka (Japan), Melbourne (Australia), Montreal (Canada) and Amsterdam (Netherlands) and is planning to add a second region in Saudi Arabia this year, as well as two in the United Arab Emirates.

Oracle is aiming to have at least two “regions” in each country where it operates to ensure customers have one primary region and one as a backup in case of disaster. “Overall, the strategy is to put lots of regions around the world to give customers data sovereignty,” said Magouyrk, adding that new data privacy regulations in the EU and elsewhere mean many businesses must retain data in the country where it’s generated.
