Orange Mali starts 5G pilot in Bamako

Orange announced the launch of a 5G pilot in Mali’s capital Bamako, inviting customers to be the first to test the new network. As reported by Maliactu, this pilot phase has been authorised by the country’s telecom regulator AMRTP. This represents the latest development in the operator’s mobile strategy, following the introduction of 4G+ services in 2019.

Orange Mali launched its 4G network in 2017, with 88 percent of the country’s population covered to date.

Orange Mali and Moov Africa Malitel workers strike over court ruling on answering machine billing

Employees of Malian mobile operators Orange Mali and Moov Africa Malitel have been on strike since 21 February to protest against the Supreme Court's decision ordering them to pay more than XOF 176 billion for having billed their customers for answering machine calls, Ecofin reported. The strike was announced by the Synergy of Telecommunications Unions. Over the past two months, the organisation has taken steps to overturn the court decision, which it considers "unfair", against the two mobile operators.

Orange Mali and German development agency GIZ open 4th Orange Digital Centre in MEA

Orange Mali and German development organisation Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) are inaugurating the Orange Digital Centre in Bamako. This is the fourth Orange Digital Centre in Africa in the Middle East after ones in Tunisia, Senegal and Ethiopia. Mali considers 4th mobile operator to boost competition

Mali's Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Hamadoun Toure has announced the government is considering opening the telecoms market to a fourth mobile operator if service prices remain expensive, Ecofin reported. Toure said the government has discussed a reduction in service costs with operators but concrete results are yet to be seen. He believes that lowering costs will not lead to a decrease in operators' profits, but will rather increase them through the higher number of users to be attracted.
